A fine art painting of the fishing trawler 'Shannon', looking out to sea, at Wells-next-the-Sea, on the North Norfolk Coast. Taken from an original photograph, using my Fuji X-T1 and Fujinon 18-55mm F2.8 - F4 lens. Converted into a painting on the computer using Topaz Impression, adjusting brush stroke size, paint opacity, and curves and levels, until i'm happy with the finished piece.

Glowing sunset

My last image entitled 'Dusk at East quay', (http://brettgardnerphotography.blogspot.co.uk/2015/04/dusk-at-east-quay.html) was taken facing away from the sun, looking East. I had wanted to capture the inky and bruised pinks and purples of the fading light, as dusk descended over the little town of Wells-Next-The-Sea. The camera was set up, tripod, cable release, filters, all in place. But glancing over my shoulder, I couldn't help noticing the sunset itself was quite terrific, the silhouettes of the many boats and buildings, a stark contrast to the fiery reds, oranges, yellows and pinks that were erupting across the North Norfolk sky.

I had my Samsung Galaxy S3 mobile phone with me, so decided to take a quick image. The bright sky was causing the camera to underexpose horribly, so I dialed in  +1 2/3 E.V. to bring a bit of foreground detail back, trying to match what the eye was seeing. I think the image works rather well, and is quite usable up to A4 size, so I may just print it out, try it in the gallery, and see what customers think.

Dusk at East Quay

Blessed with what was turning into a lovely sunset, I decided to wander down towards East Quay in Wells-Next-The-Sea. I set up the tripod, and pointed the camera away from the town, towards the East. I wanted to try and capture the lovely, bruised purple and pink tones of dusk, as the light was beginning to fade. The sunset corresponded to high tide, and I was fortunate that there was no wind. As night fell, a slower shutter speed was required to expose the scene correctly, resulting in the advancing tide taking on a smoother, slightly milky appearance. An N.D. Grad was used to control the sky, and a shutter release attached to the camera, to avoid any unwanted shake.

I'm really pleased with how this image has turned out. Looking at it again, both on screen, and in print, I can't help but be reminded of the glorious sunset that I had been privileged enough to witness, this fine Spring day.

'Big skies over the quay'

I've managed to capture a couple of nice images in the last week or so. The weather has been superb, the sunsets breathtaking, and the Norfolk coastline positively shines at such times.

This image, looking back down the East Quay, Wells-Next-The-Sea, shows fishing boat, the 'Natalie Gail', enjoying the last moments of daylight, as dusk descends over the small fishing town. The only sounds to be heard, come from the wading birds as they call and cry, and the gentle ebbing of the tide.
